John Maine

John Maine was born in Bristol and studied at the West of England College of Art for four years before moving to London to attend the Royal College of Art for a further three years (1964-67). After graduating, he became the first fellow at Gloucestershire College of Art, a two year appointment. He then set up a sculpture studio in Shoreditch, London, and travelled widely. Influences from these journeys (especially to Mexico) strongly affected his work. He was awarded the first fellowship at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, where he developed these ideas over two years. He subsequently worked in Carrara and attended the Hagi Symposium in Japan, which stimulated a lasting interest in that culture. Commissioned by the Government Art Collection, he spent a year in Australia carving a granite work for the British High Commission, Canberra. This practice of creating large works in landscape was developed further in Portland, Dorset, where he made the Chiswell Earthworks, as part of the Common Ground 'New Milestones' Project.

In recent years he has continued to explore the possibilities of setting sculpture in landscape and relating to architecture. He made a 35 ft high granite monument, to commemorate the completion of the Ryugasaki New Town Development in Iberaki, Japan (1993) which followed several years working on the Lewisham 2000 project. His Entrance Works at Standard Life House, Edinburgh, are a close integration with aspects of architecture. John Maine is working on two further projects in Scotland, in Inverurie, Aberdeenshire; and Kemnay, where the major landscape project 'Place of Origin' is in process.

During the 70's and 80's he was a part time lecturer in many Art Colleges, including the Royal College of Art. Subsequently he has become external assessor for a number of BA Hons. and MA courses.

His first one-man exhibition was held at the Serpentine Gallery in 1972, since when he has shown regularly in Britain, with occasional exhibitions abroad. He has received many awards and prizes, including The Royal College of Art Drawing Prize, The Bence Pritchard Bequest, The Walther Neurath Prize, The Mark Rothko Memorial Trust Award, and awards from The Henry Moore Foundation, The Elephant Trust, The Arts Council, The British Council, and The Japan Foundation. He was elected Royal Academician in 1995, and became a Member of the Royal West of England Academy in 1997. He is also a Commissioner at the Cathedrals Fabric Commission for England. His home and studio are now in Wiltshire.
