Chris Fremantle is an arts researcher, producer and fundraiser.

Chris is currently Research Associate on The Artist as Leader with On The Edge Research at Gray's School of Art, The Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen. On The Edge is a practice-led research project focused on the qualities of engagement in marginal contexts. Chris has been a key contributor to On The Edge since its inception in the late 1990s and has co-authored many papers with Professor Anne Douglas, Director of On The Edge, including recently 'Leading through Practice' published by a-n The Artists Information Company.

Chris is a producer in the visual arts, currently working on GREENHOUSE BRITAIN with Helen Mayer and Newton Harrison, and David Haley. Helen Mayer and Newton Harrison are eminent ecological artists and GREENHOUSE BRITAIN is a major new work addressing the fundamental question, "The oceans will rise gracefully. Can we withdraw with equal grace?"

Chris works on development with PLATFORM, the social and ecological interdisciplinary practice on Remember Saro-Wiwa. Chris has been a member of the Institute of Fundraising since 1993 and has a significant track record of successful fundraising across arts council and cultural funding, trusts and foundations, corporate sponsorship, non-arts public sector and international funding.

From 1997-2003 Chris was Director of the Scottish Sculpture Workshopp, a Scottish Arts Council client funded organisation.  He developed the organisation into an international residency centre, and focused the programme on issues of rurality and landscape. He is particularly interested in sculpture, environmental, ecological, new media, social and political practices..

  • 15 years experience at a senior level in the arts in public and voluntary sector contexts.
  • Expertise in arts management at a strategy/policy level, and at a project level across learning, research, public art, community arts, residencies, and international working.
  • Excellent fundraising skills (national and international, statutory/public sector, trusts and foundations, corporate sponsorship, individual giving).
  • Skilled at developing new contexts for the arts and working with artists particularly in relation to community and environmental issues.
  • Skilled in managing evaluation processes, with particular reference to learning.

Experience:

    Management - Chris has:

  • Delivered strategic planning – he has prepared Policy and Strategy documents for a number of organisations.
  • Owned and managed planning, monitoring and reporting to stakeholders.
  • Managed financial operations, annual organisational and project budgeting, management accounts and cashflows.
  • Managed full and part time, voluntary and temporary staff, including recruitment, line management, staff development and training.
  • Initiated, negotiated and managed the employment of artists, arts organisations and consultants working on contract.
  • Defined and led initiatives around ICT and the web for management and with artists.
  • Successfully undertaken the role of Company Secretary for two organisations. Managed audit, Companies House Returns, serviced Board.
  • Represented organisations at international, national and regional levels and actively developed strategic partnerships with key institutions.

    Fundraising - Chris has:

  • A professional member of the Institute of Fundraising since 1993.
  • Developed numerous successful applications to the National Lottery totalling over £600,000.
  • Developed successful applications to Research Councils for practice-led research initiatives.
  • Secured funding from international programmes such as the European Commission Arts Education and Training scheme, and from foreign cultural agencies including Royal Norwegian Consulate and Japan 2001 Festival.
  • Written successful applications to national competitions such as First Lights Young Film-makers, and the National Architecture Development Scheme in Scotland.
  • Secured many grants from charitable trusts (e.g. Henry Moore Foundation, Esmee Fairbairn Foundation) and developed regular support (e.g. Hope Scott Trust, PF Charitable Trust).
  • Developed successful grant proposals to a range of non-arts funding sources such as the Scottish Executive Community Environmental Renewal Grants scheme (2 grants totalling £75,000).
  • Attracted funding from local authority strategic priorities such as Community Safety, and Health priorities such as suicide reduction to deliver arts programmes.
  • Initiated a range of partnerships with companies leading to sponsorships (including major sponsorship-in-kind by Aggregate Industries of 'Place of Origin' over 7 years estimated to have been worth in excess of £500,000).

    Programme Management - Chris has:

  • Developed, managed, and fund-raised a significant range of public art projects associated with town planning, housing development, corporate promotion and community interests.
  • Researched, developed, managed and fund-raised programmes of residencies focused on critical thinking, debate and practice for visual artists in a range of disciplines..
  • Developed strategic overview and implemented programmes of arts and learning in formal school and informal community learning and development.
  • Developed key partnership with Higher Education including a major research project (On the Edge) launched by a major project award from Arts and Humanities Research Council.
  • Presented papers and represented organisations at conferences and events internationally and nationally.
  • Developed methodologies for evaluation for arts projects and for learning
